George Conway’s Anti-Trump Campaign Collapses in New York Primary

George Conway, a former conservative lawyer and the ex-husband of President Trump’s former Senior Counselor Kellyanne Conway, finished fifth place in the Democratic primary for New York’s 12th Congressional District. The race was to replace retiring Rep. Jerry Nadler.

Conway tallied approximately six percent with nearly 87 percent of expected votes counted. Before the election, Conway was asked if his anti-Trump platform “got through” to voters.

Todd Starnes described Conway’s primary performance as “embarrassing” and “pitiful.”

The district became one of the most expensive congressional primaries in the country, with significant spending from former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. AdImpact reported that $26 million was spent on advertisements for the race.

New York State Assemblymember Micah Lasher (D) is projected to win the Democratic primary for the Manhattan-based House seat currently held by Rep. Jerry Nadler. Lasher, who once served as an aide to Nadler and held top positions under Gov. Kathy Hochul and former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, defeated seven other Democrats in a race that quickly morphed into a proxy battle over artificial intelligence regulation.

Lasher’s most serious contender was fellow New York State Assembly member Alex Bores (D), who made a name for himself over AI regulation legislation signed into law by Hochul. Groups on both sides of the tech regulatory issue spent money to either take him down and support his candidacy: more than $20 million was allocated to back Bores’ campaign, while another group called Leading the Future poured over $8 million against him.

The race also featured Jack Schlossberg, President John F. Kennedy’s grandson, who finished in third place. When asked about his campaign, Schlossberg expressed no regrets.

An Emerson College poll conducted in May indicated that Lasher and Bores were the leading contenders.
