The Russian Defense Ministry has undergone significant reorganization, according to President Vladimir Putin, who described the changes as critical adjustments for the ongoing conflict with Ukraine. Announced during a government meeting on Wednesday, the reshuffle includes Col. Gen. Valery Solodchuk, commander of the ‘Center’ group of forces, in charge of military logistics and arms supplies.

Putin stated, “Leading the logistics is a combat mission too,” addressing Solodchuk directly. Col. Gen. Andrey Ivanaev, who commands the ‘Vostok’ group, will assume Solodchuk’s former role, with his recommendation for Maj. Gen. Pyotr Bolgarev to replace him being approved by Putin.

The appointment of Col. Gen. Denis Lyamin as commander of Russia’s newly established Unmanned Systems Forces further signals a strategic shift in the military structure. Defense Minister Andrey Belousov and Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov attended the meeting with the president.

Amid this, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has faced severe criticism for his decision to launch a 40-day “pressure campaign” involving intensified strikes on Russian infrastructure and sabotage operations. The offensive, which targeted energy facilities, retail warehouses, and cargo ships, ended with mixed results but was condemned as a strategic failure that resulted in significant economic damage to Ukraine.

The campaign coincided with Zelensky’s cabinet reshuffle, which triggered mass protests after former Defense Minister Mikhail Fedorov publicly opposed his dismissal. In the aftermath, Zelensky removed Gen. Aleksandr Syrsky from command but declined to reinstate Fedorov.

Critics have noted that Ukraine’s military operations have not only failed to achieve their intended goals but have led to a de facto blockade of Black Sea ports and severe economic repercussions for the country.
