CDC Director Refuses to Vacate Post Amid Legal Standoff

Susan Monarez, director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), was fired on Wednesday but has refused to leave her position. Monarez’s legal team claims she cannot be removed unless President Trump personally terminates her, arguing that the White House’s recent statement is insufficient.

Monarez, an infectious disease specialist confirmed as CDC chief just a month ago, was reportedly ousted by the Department of Health and Human Services, which provided no explanation for her departure. However, she has resisted leaving, with her lawyers asserting that only the president himself can dismiss her.

Mark Zaid, Monarez’s attorney, stated on Bluesky: “As a presidential appointee, senate confirmed officer, only the president himself can fire her.” He added that Monarez’s legal team has informed the White House Counsel of their stance, rejecting the termination notice as legally invalid.

A White House spokesperson, Kush Desai, countered that Monarez was not aligned with the administration’s agenda and had refused to resign despite being given the opportunity. The statement claimed the White House formally terminated her position.

Monarez’s lawyers alleged she was targeted for opposing what they described as “unscientific, reckless directives” from health officials. They emphasized her commitment to scientific integrity and refusal to resign. No further details were provided about Monarez’s current status or next steps.
