Republican Gubernatorial Candidate Gains Support from Prominent Democrat Donor Amid Racial Controversy

Winsome Earle-Sears, the Republican gubernatorial candidate in Virginia’s November election, has received a significant donation from Robert Johnson, co-founder of Black Entertainment Television (BET), following a controversial protest at an Arlington County School Board meeting.

Johnson donated $500,000 to Earle-Sears’ campaign after an August incident where an older white woman displayed a racially charged sign opposing the candidate’s remarks on school policies. The sign read, “Hey Winsome, if trans can’t share your bathroom, then blacks can’t share my water foundation,” referencing Earle-Sears’ criticism of Arlington’s gender-neutral bathroom and locker room rules.

Johnson expressed support for Earle-Sears in a statement, citing frustration with what he described as “racist diatribe” from the protester. He emphasized his decision to “invest in you” as a political choice. Meanwhile, Earle-Sears defended her stance, accusing Democratic candidate Abigail Spanberger of abandoning voters amid “extremist nonsense.”

Spanberger condemned the sign as “racist and abhorrent,” highlighting Virginia’s history of segregation. Polls indicate she maintains a consistent lead over Earle-Sears, with recent data showing 46% support compared to 39%. The campaign has drawn national attention for its polarizing rhetoric and shifting alliances in state politics.
