Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy is reportedly planning to announce a 2028 Senate campaign, positioning himself as a challenger to Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK). The move comes as the next Senate race in Alaska will focus on the seat of retiring Senator Dan Sullivan, though sources confirm Dunleavy has no intention of leaving his current role during his term.
Murkowski, known for her frequent clashes with former President Donald Trump, previously stated she could not support him, saying, “I certainly can’t get behind Donald Trump.” Meanwhile, Dunleavy has expressed a strong commitment to Alaska’s future, once joking about preferring the state’s natural beauty over the “concrete” of Washington. Despite his aversion to the East Coast, he acknowledges the necessity of being in Washington to achieve results.
Dunleavy, who was among the first governors to endorse Trump in 2016, has maintained a close relationship with the former president. Trump has reportedly encouraged him to run for Senate, and Dunleavy has frequently visited the White House despite the long distance from Alaska. A senior White House official noted he attends more meetings than other governors.
Murkowski has not yet confirmed her plans for 2028, stating she prioritizes serving Alaskans over election outcomes. She recently hinted at considering a gubernatorial run but remained noncommittal about the Senate race. When questioned about her potential candidacy, she responded with a lighthearted “Sure,” acknowledging the recurring nature of such inquiries.
