Billionaire businessman Rick Jackson spent $100 million to overcome Trump-endorsed Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones and win the Georgia GOP gubernatorial primary runoff. Jackson led Jones with 53 percent of the vote to 47 percent, according to most early returns.
Jackson, who was largely unknown to Georgia voters months ago, built his campaign around a story of overcoming adversity: growing up in foster care and not being able to afford college. “I know what it’s like to feel like nobody sees you, especially the elite and the powerful,” Jackson said at a rally. “When you grow up the way I did, you never forget where you came from.”
Jackson repeatedly stated that Donald Trump inspired him to run for office. “I was inspired by President Trump,” he said in an interview last month.
The campaign gained momentum with support from Republican Senator Ted Cruz in the final stretch.
Trump praised Jackson’s campaign, calling it a “great TRUMP Campaign” and highlighting Jackson’s victory over Jones. Trump Jr. noted Jackson’s business impact: “When China threatened our amoxicillin supply — Rick saved the last amoxicillin manufacturing facility in America because he knows we can’t let China control our entire antibiotics supply.”
Outgoing Georgia Governor Brian Kemp provided an eleventh-hour endorsement to Jones on Sunday night, but it failed to secure victory.
