Rep. Haley Stevens (D-MI), a Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in Michigan, faced allegations of fabricating an endorsement from Berrien County Commissioner Chokwe Pitchford. According to the Daily Caller, Stevens posted on X thanking Pitchford for endorsing her campaign. However, Pitchford denied the claim, stating, “I literally never endorsed her or heard a word from her team.” He emphasized he had not engaged in discussions about endorsements or expressed openness to supporting her.
Stevens later deleted the post referencing Pitchford’s endorsement. Her campaign attributed the situation to a “miscommunication,” per a statement from spokesperson Reeves Oyster, though no details were provided. The Stevens campaign highlighted other endorsements, including from former Speaker Joe Tate and multiple local officials.
Pitchford described the incident as “the most strange thing that has ever happened to me in politics,” reiterating he had not endorsed Stevens or any Senate candidate. The Michigan Senate race remains competitive, with Stevens leading at 24% in a crowded Democratic primary, followed by Abdul El-Sayed at 22% and State Sen. Mallory McMorrow at 11%.
