As Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY) announced his retirement, speculation emerged about potential candidates for his open seat in New York’s 10th Congressional District. Chelsea Clinton, daughter of former President Bill Clinton and First Lady Hillary Clinton, has dismissed rumors that she is considering a bid for the position.
A spokesperson for Clinton confirmed to the Washington Examiner that reports suggesting she would run were unfounded. “There is no truth to this,” the spokesperson stated, adding that Clinton is not contemplating a campaign for the seat. The news follows days of speculation about who might fill Nadler’s role, following his decision to step down after over three decades in Congress.
Nadler, 78, cited calls for generational change within the Democratic Party as a reason for his retirement. He noted that younger members had urged a shift in leadership, a sentiment he felt compelled to honor. “Watching the Biden thing really said something about the necessity for generational change in the party,” Nadler told the New York Times.
This is not the first time Chelsea Clinton has been linked to political opportunities. In 2019, speculation arose that she might seek the seat of retiring Rep. Nita Lowey, though she later indicated she would only consider such a move if circumstances aligned.
Meanwhile, Jack Schlossberg, grandson of former President John F. Kennedy, has also entered the conversation. The 32-year-old social media influencer told the New York Times that running for Nadler’s seat “certainly is a possibility.”
