A former television dancer who entered the United States legally and then remained illegally for nearly 14 years has been detained by federal immigration authorities.

Roberts Nemiro, 43, was arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in San Francisco on July 28 after receiving a referral from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Federal officials determined that Nemiro entered the country on a visa that expired in August 2012 but stayed without lawful status until his recent arrest.

Nemiro previously competed on Latvia’s version of “Dancing With the Stars,” known as “Dejo ar zvaigzni!” He has been cited for convictions including aggravated assault with a firearm and disorderly conduct, as well as arrests for battery, sexual battery, possession of controlled substances, and drug paraphernalia.

DHS Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis stated that ICE made the arrest despite California’s sanctuary policies and that Nemiro would face deportation proceedings. He remains in federal immigration custody while removal proceedings are conducted.
