Democratic Primary Upset Exposes Deep Rift Over Israel as Goldman Falls

Rep. Dan Goldman (D-NY) has been defeated in the Democratic primary for New York’s 10th Congressional District, which covers Lower Manhattan and parts of Brooklyn. The race, dominated by former New York City Comptroller Brad Lander with a margin of approximately 30 points, highlights growing divisions within the Democratic Party over U.S. policy toward Israel.

Goldman, who served as lead counsel during President Trump’s first impeachment trial, entered Congress in 2022 after narrowly winning a crowded primary. He positioned himself as a progressive advocate for Israel, seeking to distinguish criticism of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Gaza conflict from opposition to military aid to the nation. Lander criticized Goldman for his perceived lack of resistance against wealthy special interests, labeling him a “corporate Democrat.”

Lander emphasized that Democratic voters desire a reset in U.S.-Israel relations without compromising on human rights. Goldman’s greatest vulnerability emerged on Israel policy, where he received support from both the American Israel Public Affairs Committee and J Street. He defended his stance by noting his bill to target tax evasion among billionaires, stating it addresses systemic inequality.
