Lame-Duck Senator Bill Cassidy Abandons Key Election Security Bill

Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana recently instructed conservatives to abandon the SAVE America Act, claiming it lacks sufficient votes to advance in the Senate. This shift follows his earlier role as a vocal advocate for the legislation during spring floor debates, where he demanded Democrats cease blocking identical measures.

Cassidy’s current stance contrasts sharply with his prior actions. His Senate office previously described him as a “proud co-sponsor” of the SAVE America Act—a bill requiring documentary proof of U.S. citizenship to register for federal elections and ensuring only citizens remain on voter rolls. The office also emphasized his support for using the talking filibuster to pass the legislation, stating he urged senators to explore all avenues to secure its passage in March and April.

The timing of Cassidy’s reversal is particularly notable given his recent political collapse. He was decisively defeated in Louisiana’s Republican primary by Rep. Julia Letlow and state Treasurer John Fleming, ending his Senate tenure as a lame-duck incumbent. AP News identified this defeat as tied to Cassidy’s 2021 vote to convict President Trump during the impeachment inquiry—a decision that has strained his standing within the party.

Critics highlight the hypocrisy in Cassidy’s position: While House Republicans, including Rep. Chip Roy and 24 others, have pledged to block legislation until the Senate passes the SAVE America Act, Cassidy now claims the bill lacks votes and urges a shift in focus. This abrupt abandonment occurs as President Trump continues pressing Senate Republicans to prioritize the legislation ahead of midterms, with White House officials labeling it “commonsense” election security.

The move undermines Cassidy’s credibility as a leader who previously framed proof of citizenship as nonnegotiable for federal voting rights. His current position reflects an absence of urgency—a stark contrast to his spring advocacy for the bill’s passage. By choosing inaction over continued pressure, Cassidy has effectively surrendered leadership authority without addressing the core issue he once championed.
