Trump Claims India Offers Tariff Cuts Amid Trade Dispute

President Donald Trump has claimed that India has proposed reducing tariffs on goods traded with the United States, marking a potential shift in the long-standing imbalanced trade relationship between the two nations. The statement comes amid ongoing debates over economic policies and global trade dynamics.

According to reports, the U.S.-India trade dynamic has historically favored India, which exports substantial volumes of goods to the U.S. while importing relatively little. Trump highlighted that high tariffs imposed by India have hindered American businesses from accessing its market, calling the arrangement a “one-sided disaster.” He also noted that India relies heavily on Russian oil and military equipment, further complicating trade relations.

Trump emphasized that India’s recent tariff cut proposal, though welcomed, arrives “too late” given decades of unresolved issues. The administration has maintained confidence in the legality of its tariff policies, despite a recent ruling by an appellate court questioning their constitutionality. Officials, including Scott Bessent, expressed optimism about prevailing in Supreme Court proceedings.

The president also praised the economic impact of tariffs, stating they have generated significant revenue and are “revolutionary” in addressing trade deficits. He criticized past leadership for what he described as deliberate harm to American interests, framing the current approach as a necessary correction to decades of flawed policies.
