A man who held several people hostage inside a Chase Bank in Bakersfield, California, has been shot and killed by FBI agents during an ongoing standoff that began with a bomb threat at the branch.
The incident started when an unidentified man entered the bank around 1 p.m. Tuesday and barricaded himself with an unknown number of hostages, according to Bakersfield Police Department Sgt. Eric Celedon.
Authorities reported two hostages were released after hours of negotiations, and a second hostage was later freed. The police department confirmed no injuries were reported among the hostages.
The FBI and U.S. Department of Homeland Security are assisting in the operation, with multiple resources deployed including SWAT teams, bomb squads, K9 units, and crisis negotiators.
Bakersfield Police stated that the suspect died as a result of an officer-involved shooting involving Federal Bureau of Investigation personnel. The police department emphasized that their officers were not involved in the use of force and that all hostages received medical attention at the scene.
The bank branch was located on the ground floor of a building where Bakersfield City Hall, local police headquarters, and multiple roads were closed during the incident.
Chase Bank representatives confirmed they were aware of the situation at their Bakersfield location.
Bakersfield Police Sergeant Eric Celedon told reporters that “Every single resource is at the site’s disposal.”
