With celebrities withdrawing from planned concerts and local July 4th celebrations being canceled across communities nationwide, patriotism has dwindled within traditionally left-leaning institutions. However, as the nation approaches its 250th anniversary, the National Basketball Association is temporarily shedding its reputation for supporting progressive causes to pay tribute to the milestone.
The NBA has partnered with sports trading-card company Topps and other America-focused groups for a front-row celebration during this year’s playoffs. For the New York Knicks versus San Antonio Spurs Finals series, players will wear patches reading “USA 250” on their jerseys.
According to Topps, these patches will be removed after each game, with select game-worn patches featured in limited-edition trading cards labeled as “ultra-rare.” The initiative is part of the NBA’s year-long campaign for American heritage, announced in January. While social media has raised questions about the NBA and Topps’ motivations, many fans are anticipating the tribute.
Early reports indicate that other major sports leagues may soon introduce similar America 250-themed promotions. The White House has also spurred several sports-friendly initiatives for the semiquincentennial, including a UFC event on the White House lawn in June and President Donald Trump’s announcement of the Patriot Games—a four-day athletic competition featuring high school athletes from every state.
Additionally, President Donald Trump is expected to meet with commissioners of four major sports leagues next week to discuss celebrations marking America’s 250th birthday.
