Trump to Remove U.S. Attorney Amid Fraud Probe Dead End

According to reports, President Trump is set to dismiss U.S. Attorney Erik Siebert following a five-month investigation that failed to uncover evidence of mortgage fraud involving New York Attorney General Letitia James. The probe centered on allegations that James falsely claimed a Virginia home as her primary residence, despite being required to live in New York as an elected official.

Sources familiar with the matter revealed that administration officials have informed Siebert of Trump’s decision, with his final day expected to be Friday. Abbe Lowell, an attorney for James, criticized the move as a “brazen attack on the rule of law,” accusing the president of punishing officials who refuse to align with his political agenda.

Siebert was appointed by Trump in May and had been tasked with investigating James. The White House reportedly plans to replace him with someone more inclined to pursue charges against her. Meanwhile, a New York appeals court recently dismissed a $500 million civil fraud penalty against Trump, ruling the fine unconstitutional. The case, which targeted Trump’s business practices, had previously secured a $464 million judgment against him and his company, though the financial penalty was overturned.

The legal battle, initiated in 2022, marked James as one of Trump’s most vocal critics, threatening his wealth and business empire. A divided court decision left the case pending further review.
