President Trump warned that Republicans face a “brutal” electoral future unless they end the filibuster, calling it “The Nuclear Option.” He claimed Democrats would dominate the midterms and presidential elections if the procedural tool remains in place, arguing it blocks “Common Sense Policies” and allows “Crazed Democrat Lunatics” to obstruct progress.
Trump asserted that scrapping the filibuster would enable Republicans to pass “FAIR, FREE, and SAFE Elections,” restrict “Men in Women’s Sports or Transgender for Everybody,” strengthen borders, cut taxes and energy costs, and protect the Second Amendment. He warned that failing to act would result in a “PACKED Supreme Court,” additional Democratic senators from D.C. and Puerto Rico, and 8 more electoral votes.
The president cited Democrats’ refusal to support a stopgap funding bill as a key obstacle, noting their demand to extend expiring Obamacare subsidies amid rising insurance premiums. He urged Senate Republicans to terminate the filibuster, claiming it would allow “EVERYTHING approved, like no Congress in History.” However, Senate Majority Leader John Thune stated there is “not enough support” among GOP senators to eliminate the 60-vote threshold, estimating only 10-12 of 53 Republican lawmakers would back the move.
Thune defended the filibuster as a critical check on majority power, noting its utility for Republicans when they were in the minority. He warned that removing it without bipartisan agreement could leave Republicans “owning all the crap” from future Democratic policies.
