Virginia state Sen. Ghazala Hashmi, the Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor, has been projected as the winner of the race, making her the first Muslim woman elected to a statewide office in United States history. Decision Desk HQ announced the projection, stating Hashmi would defeat Republican candidate John Reid.
Hashmi’s victory comes after a competitive campaign against Reid, a former conservative talk radio host who aimed to become the first openly gay Republican elected to a statewide position. The race focused on key issues, with Hashmi emphasizing opposition to President Donald Trump’s policies and increased funding for public education, while Reid prioritized tax cuts, business deregulation, and restricting transgender athletes from girls’ sports.
Hashmi narrowly secured her Democratic primary in June, overcoming challenges from former Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney and state Sen. Aaron Rouse. She is backed by progressive Democrats, including Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.). Virginia also saw its first woman governor elected in a two-candidate contest between former Democratic Rep. Abigail Spanberger and Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears, with Spanberger projected as the winner.
The race saw fluctuating polls ahead of Election Day, but Hashmi maintained an edge throughout the general election. Her historic win marks a milestone in U.S. political representation.
