Transportation Secretary Warns of Air Travel Chaos Amid Government Shutdown

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy issued a stark warning about potential “mass chaos” for U.S. air travel if the government shutdown persists. He stated that the Department of Transportation might restrict airspace in certain regions next week unless the impasse is resolved.

Duffy emphasized, “If you bring us to a week from today, Democrats will see mass chaos. You’ll witness massive flight delays, cancellations, and possibly the closure of parts of the airspace because we can’t manage it without air traffic controllers.” The Federal Aviation Administration reported that nearly 50% of major air traffic control facilities face staffing shortages. Air traffic controllers, deemed essential workers during shutdowns, have been operating without pay.

“We will delay or cancel flights across the national airspace to ensure safety amid these shortages,” Duffy told ABC News’ “This Week” co-anchor Martha Raddatz. He highlighted risks posed by controllers handling double workloads, noting a ground stop at Newark Liberty International Airport on Sunday.

NBC News reported over 5,000 delayed U.S. flights on Sunday, with 84% of delays attributed to staff shortages. Duffy reiterated that air traffic controllers face another unpaid paycheck if the shutdown continues, urging Congress to act. “The ball is in your court,” he said. “Vote to reopen the government now so these hardworking Americans aren’t forced into untenable situations.”

Duffy stressed the critical need for controllers, stating the system lacks 2,000 to 3,000 personnel. He warned of financial strain on controllers, who may take second jobs or leave the profession. “None of them can miss two paychecks,” he said.

On Monday, over 2,885 flights were delayed, and 70 canceled, with major airports like Chicago O’Hare and New York’s JFK experiencing significant disruptions. While the direct link between staffing shortages and delays remains unclear, Duffy’s warnings underscore the escalating crisis.
