Tyler Robinson, accused of killing Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, was not identified or arrested until two days after the shooting. New details reveal he had contact with police on the same day as the attack, shortly after the incident occurred.
According to the Utah Department of Public Safety Commissioner, Beau Mason, Robinson “made contact” with an officer near the campus where Kirk was killed. This interaction took place hours after the sniper’s bullet struck Kirk during a speaking event at Utah Valley University. Mason confirmed Robinson returned to the campus to retrieve the alleged murder weapon but declined to share specifics about the encounter.
Investigations show Robinson visited local businesses and made purchases in the days following the shooting. However, authorities have not disclosed why the contact with police was only revealed weeks later. The commissioner stated the details remain part of the ongoing investigation.
Robinson fled the scene and traveled 250 miles to his home in St. George, Utah, before being arrested. He is facing seven charges, including capital murder, after allegedly confessing to his transgender partner via text that he killed Kirk due to “hatred.”
The lack of transparency surrounding the police interaction has raised questions about the investigation’s completeness. While body camera footage from a 2022 incident involving Robinson surfaced, no evidence from the day of the killing has been released.
Authorities have yet to explain why details of the contact were delayed or whether video exists. The case continues to draw scrutiny as the public seeks clarity on the events surrounding Kirk’s death.
