The Netherlands has moved to classify Antifa as a terrorist organization, mirroring actions taken by former U.S. President Donald Trump. According to reports, a majority in the lower house of the Dutch Parliament approved a motion sponsored by Lidewij de Vos (FvD), Caroline van der Plas (BBB), and Geert Wilders (PVV). The proposal received backing from the VVD, SGP, and JA21 parties.
The sponsors argued that Antifa cells operate in the Netherlands, posing threats to politicians, disrupting public events, intimidating students and journalists, and resorting to violence. However, the National Counter-Terrorism Unit (NCTV) stated that left-wing extremism in the country is “fragmented, small in number, and diverse in ideology.”
Volt leader Laurens Dassen criticized the swift decision, claiming it enables the suppression of dissenting views. “With the support of the VVD, unwelcome opinions are now being banned with a stroke of the pen,” he said on BlueSky. Trump had previously announced on Truth Social that he would designate Antifa as a “major terrorist organization” and urged investigations into its funders.
Hungary also pledged to follow Trump’s example. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, a staunch ally, stated that Antifa qualifies as a terrorist group and called for similar designations in Hungary. He referenced a 2023 incident involving antifascist activists clashing with far-right participants in Budapest. The episode led to the detention of Italian activist Ilaria Salis, sparking diplomatic tensions between Rome and Budapest.
