Jimmy Kimmel’s highly anticipated return to late-night television is facing significant setbacks as two of ABC’s largest affiliate networks have refused to air his program. Despite Disney’s reversal in granting Kimmel his show, Sinclair Broadcast Group and Nexstar Media Group—two of the nation’s most influential TV station owners—have opted to preempt “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” tonight, citing concerns over his recent remarks.
Sinclair, which operates 41 ABC-affiliated stations nationwide, announced it would replace Kimmel’s show with news programming on Tuesday. The company cited ongoing discussions with ABC but emphasized its decision to avoid airing the late-night host following what it described as “ill-timed and insensitive” comments during a pivotal moment in national discourse. Nexstar, which oversees 32 ABC affiliates, made a similar announcement, stating it would not broadcast the show due to Kimmel’s false claim that Charlie Kirk was killed by a MAGA supporter.
The move affects key markets across the U.S., including Washington, D.C., Seattle, St. Louis, Portland, Ore., Rochester, N.Y., Columbus, Ohio, Birmingham, Ala., and Little Rock-Pine Bluff, Ark. Sinclair’s decision impacts 41 stations, while Nexstar’s action covers an additional 32 affiliates. Together, the networks represent 73 stations where Kimmel’s program will not air.
Both companies highlighted their commitment to fostering “respectful, constructive dialogue” in their communities, though they did not specify further details about potential future broadcasts. Kimmel’s show remains available on Disney-owned streaming platforms but is excluded from local ABC affiliates under Sinclair and Nexstar’s control.
