Kia has issued a recall for nearly 40,000 vehicles due to a defective heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system that poses a fire hazard. The affected models include 2021-2023 Kia Sorento SUVs, with the defect involving inadequate wiring in the HVAC blower motor.
The recall notice states that the faulty wiring harness could overheat, increasing the risk of fire. Approximately 39,536 vehicles are impacted, spanning model years 2021 to 2023. Kia plans to notify owners via letters scheduled for mailing on November 24. Owners are advised to visit authorized dealerships, where technicians will replace the blower motor resistor circuit harness and resistor at no cost.
Kia estimates that about 1% of the recalled vehicles—roughly 395 units—exhibit the defect. The issue is tied to thin wiring gauges sourced from a Mexican supplier, according to the automaker. Warning signs for drivers may include an inoperable blower motor, burning odors, or smoke emanating from vents.
The recall covers all 2021-2023 Kia Sorento LX models manufactured between September 10, 2020, and December 29, 2023, at Kia’s Georgia plant. Vehicles produced in 2024 are excluded, as they feature an updated HVAC system.
