Iowa Teen Fatally Shot After Hunter Mistakes Him for Squirrel

A 17-year-old Iowa student was killed when a fellow hunter mistakenly identified him as a squirrel and shot him in the head, according to officials. Carson Ryan, a member of his school’s track and field team, died Saturday after being struck by gunfire from within his own hunting group. The incident occurred around 3 p.m. near Iowa City, where Ryan was participating in a squirrel hunt. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources stated that Ryan “was mistaken for a squirrel by a member of his hunting party.” He later succumbed to his injuries at University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center. Ryan’s school community expressed grief on social media, sharing an image of him in his team uniform and urging support for his family. A GoFundMe campaign organized by loved ones has raised over $52,600 to assist with expenses following the tragedy. The case remains under investigation.
