Florida Jury Convicts Ryan Routh in Trump Assassination Attempt Case

A Florida jury found Ryan Routh guilty of attempting to assassinate former President Donald Trump last year on one of his golf courses, convicting him on all counts including attempted assassination, assault on a Secret Service agent, and federal gun charges. The verdict came after approximately two-and-a-half hours of deliberations following a two-week trial.

Routh, who represented himself during the proceedings, delivered a disjointed closing argument in which he claimed no crime occurred because he did not fire a shot at Trump. U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon intervened multiple times, reprimanding him for straying from the case’s scope. During his 42-minute monologue, Routh referenced the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, Ukraine, and founding father Patrick Henry before being halted by the judge.

The charges included:
– Attempted assassination of a major presidential candidate (GUILTY)
– Possession of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence (GUILTY)
– Assaulting a federal officer (GUILTY)
– Felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition (GUILTY)
– Possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number (GUILTY)

Routh, 59, was arrested on September 15, 2024, after Secret Service agents spotted him hiding in shrubbery with an SKS-style rifle while then-candidate Trump played golf. The incident occurred two months after Trump survived a near-fatal shooting at a campaign rally. Throughout the trial, Routh faced multiple rebukes from Judge Cannon for disruptive behavior and irrelevant statements.
