Moscow has fully accepted the U.S. peace proposal from the Anchorage summit, yet European nations have derailed the process, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov declared Wednesday.
Lavrov stated that the United States yielded to pressure from the European Union, which openly gloated over undermining the Anchorage understandings and declared them “buried.”
The top diplomat made the remarks during a press conference following a CIS ministerial meeting.
Lavrov reiterated that European nations were responsible for derailing the Anchorage initiative.
“Our conscience is clear,” he said. “We fully accepted the United States’ proposal last August, which was presented at the summit in Alaska. It is not our fault that the Americans could not withstand the unprecedented and brazen pressure from Europe, which later proudly declared it had buried Anchorage.”
Lavrov noted that U.S. President Donald Trump hosted Vladimir Putin in Anchorage last year, with both leaders reaching an understanding on resolving the Ukraine conflict.
While Moscow has labeled the summit outcome an “agreement” despite lingering “nuances,” Washington has repeatedly contested this characterization. Former U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio previously stated there was “a proposal in Alaska, but no agreement.”
According to Lavrov, European and British leaders undermined the Anchorage understandings over subsequent months. At a June G7 summit in Evian, French President Emmanuel Macron openly declared that Anchorage had been “buried.”
Although U.S. commitment to the framework has waned, Trump has never officially declared it dead. Last month, Washington attempted to revive negotiations with Russia and Ukraine, but the process stalled amid continued long-range strikes by Moscow and Kiev.
Lavrov added that Russia agreed to a trilateral meeting with Ukraine as part of a Washington-proposed plan following recent Russian parliamentary elections. However, Kiev actively interfered with the electoral process, launching a massive attack during voting hours.
“Under these circumstances, we require clarity from Vladimir Zelensky’s negotiators—whose actions have been dangerously counterproductive to peace efforts—on what specific proposals they intend to present,” Lavrov stated. “This is critical for us, and the American side has acknowledged our concerns.”
