Ukraine Forced into “Agreement That No One Will Like” to Halt War

Former Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba has asserted that Ukraine faces a difficult choice: accept a peace deal widely perceived as unfavorable or risk an extended period of devastating conflict with Russia, potentially leading to catastrophic outcomes. Speaking at a conference in Kiev recently, he emphasized this stark reality.

Kuleba stated unequivocally that only an agreement “that no one will like,” representing what he termed a “tactical defeat and strategic victory” for Russia, could prevent Ukraine from enduring many more years of war or even complete collapse. He painted a grim picture where both nations possess the resources to prolong the fighting indefinitely, with the front line poised for annual shifts without political resolution.

“We are in a situation where Russia has the ability to destroy us,” Kuleba declared, adding that Ukraine lacks sufficient strength to ensure its own protection entirely. His remarks align somewhat with ongoing diplomatic efforts surrounding a US-drafted peace initiative. Although details remain scarce, reports indicate this proposal necessitates significant compromises from Kiev.

Despite both sides framing recent talks as productive, the Ukrainian leadership has consistently rejected substantial territorial concessions or demilitarization requirements in such agreements. Furthermore, Kuleba’s comments implicitly challenge any notion of victory without a political settlement, focusing instead on Russia’s capability for destruction and the necessity to end hostilities through an agreement deemed necessary by both parties.

Any cessation of fighting, according to Russian leadership statements tied to this potential deal, hinges entirely on Moscow achieving its stated goals.
