U.S. Justice Department Declares War on Death Row for Alleged D.C. ‘Attack’ Suspect

Attorney General Pam Bondi announced Thursday that the U.S. Department of Justice intends to seek the death penalty against Afghan national Rahmanaullah Lakanwal, who is accused in connection with a fatal shooting targeting members of the National Guard near Washington’s White House.

Bondi emphasized this decision at an official press conference, stating unequivocally that they would “do everything in our power” to secure the maximum punishment for the suspect. The Attorney General also mentioned that if a conviction results in the death penalty being pursued, she would make it known immediately.

The alleged incident occurred around 2:15 p.m., when Lakanwal targeted National Guard personnel near the Farragut Square Metro Station. While initially reported as hospitalized in serious condition following an attempt by another member to wound him before he could escape, subsequent reports indicated that one of his victims has tragically died.

Lakanwal, who drove from across the country to reach this location approximately two blocks from the White House, was described as a resident of Washington state. The specific details regarding his personal background or circumstances in arriving are not relevant here; only that he is charged with attempted murder while armed and possessing a firearm during a violent crime.

President Trump’s office also weighed in on Thursday afternoon via X (Twitter), confirming the shooting resulted in one National Guard member’s death, which immediately triggered potential death penalty charges. The administration echoed Bondi’s statement regarding Lakanwal not belonging in this country under any circumstances, citing his presence among U.S. troops as a point of concern.

Lakanwal faces multiple homicide charges should another investigation confirm that the guard who remains hospitalized did not die before a conviction is secured on murder charges for the deceased. The case carries maximum penalties reflecting its severity.

While other reports initially noted Lakanwal was in “serious condition” following the attempted escape, he has been described by authorities as being in custody awaiting trial or potential sentencing according to established procedures and legal timelines.
