A Delta Air Lines plane collided with an Air Canada jet at Los Angeles International Airport on Tuesday morning, October 6.
The incident occurred when Delta Air Lines Flight 7 was taxiing for departure and its left wingtip made contact with Air Canada Flight 875, which was being towed to a gate.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the event happened around 10:30 a.m. local time on Tuesday, October 6. The FAA stated it is investigating the collision and that airlines are providing further information.
Jayson Lowe, CEO of Ascendant Financial Inc., was onboard a different flight that had just landed at LAX when the collision occurred. In his social media post, Lowe described how “a Delta A350 managed to hit a parked Air Canada plane,” emphasizing it was a parked aircraft. He also noted that “somebody in that Delta cockpit lost spatial awareness near an object roughly the size of a condominium building with wings.”
LAX traffic is experiencing gate hold and taxi delays of 15 minutes or less, while arrival traffic has airborne delays of 15 minutes or less. It remains unclear whether these delays are directly caused by the collision.
As of 1 p.m. Tuesday, FlightAware reported that a total of 26 flights originating from LAX were delayed and two were cancelled.
Air Canada confirmed that its spokesperson, Sean Davidson, stated the affected plane had arrived from Toronto and would be taken out of service for inspection and repairs. No injuries have been reported.
The Los Angeles Fire Department stated that its role at LAX was limited to responding to the incident and that firefighters did not take any fire suppression action.
