President Trump brought reporters outside for a tour of recent work underway at the White House. They heard about granite installations, a new helipad, driveway repairs and the South Lawn restoration. But when the President turned his attention to the grass itself, he delivered a line that captured his focus: “If you’re grass, you’re very happy.”
Most politicians would have moved on from landscaping details. Trump instead provided a full explanation of topsoil health, grass conditions and what the lawn was feeling. He stated the ground had been redone with fresh topsoil containing “a lot of good ingredients” before thanking Scotts Miracle-Gro for providing the restoration free of charge.
The lawn work was part of a broader White House construction tour where President Trump personally showed reporters the granite being installed around a new helicopter landing area on the South Lawn. He praised the stone’s strength, noted the project would impress foreign leaders and even signed the back of a granite piece destined for inclusion in the presidential seal. The President also explained delays occurred to regrade the landing area and create a flatter surface.
The tour included visits to the new ballroom, replaced driveway and ongoing efforts to remake White House grounds. Grass has become one of President Trump’s favorite subjects, and he expressed particular satisfaction with how this job was progressing. During the tour, he walked over to thank workers installing the helipad while ensuring reporters accompanied him.
Scotts Miracle-Gro Company committed $1 million in monetary and product support to the National Park Service for South Lawn restoration following the UFC Freedom 250 event. Beyond supplying standard seed or sod, the company’s scientists developed a custom turfgrass blend combining tall fescues and Kentucky bluegrasses specifically designed for durability, heat resistance, disease tolerance and color retention. This mix was selected from eight options after rigorous testing.
The restoration plan included new sod installation, overseeding and technical assistance from Scotts’ research team—critical considerations given the lawn’s expected role in hosting major events while enduring heavy foot traffic and Washington’s changing seasonal conditions. The work became necessary after the temporary UFC event setup left grounds damaged.
While thanking Scotts Miracle-Gro, President Trump added a political aside about the company’s contribution to his campaign, though he did not specify whether it referred to the company itself, an executive, affiliated committees or campaign organizations. Federal Election Commission records show an active Scotts Miracle-Gro Co. Stewardship PAC listed as unauthorized, but the President did not identify this during remarks.
Regardless of the precise reference, the $1 million commitment to the National Park Service was confirmed by both Scotts and the White House before the UFC event. Now, Trump described the grass as in a “temporary state of shock” while new growth takes hold—telling reporters it would look beautiful within two or three weeks.
