Congress has been briefed that a potential military confrontation with Venezuela is imminent, according to a congressional source. President Trump is scheduled to address the nation tonight at 9 p.m. from the White House to announce the decision.
The U.S. military has escalated operations in the Caribbean, including strikes on drug boats that have killed at least 11 people. A naval blockade of sanctioned Venezuelan oil tankers was implemented after the seizure of one vessel last week.
As of Wednesday, at least 34 U.S.-sanctioned oil tankers with histories of transporting Venezuelan crude are currently operating in the Caribbean. Data from Kpler indicates that approximately 12 of these tankers are loaded with Venezuelan oil.
President Trump recently designated Venezuela’s ruling regime as a foreign terrorist organization and vowed to impose a “complete and total blockade” on sanctioned oil tankers. Analysts at Kpler warn that these vessels may face heightened scrutiny and potential enforcement actions by U.S. authorities in the near future.
