Nick Reiner, son of slain Hollywood director Rob Reiner, made his first court appearance today on charges of first-degree murder for allegedly killing his parents.
During the hearing, Reiner was barely visible and not shown on camera. He wore a suicide prevention vest and did not enter a plea. His arraignment has been postponed until January 7, 2026, with the judge ordering him held without bail.
According to law enforcement sources, Reiner checked into the Pierside Santa Monica hotel shortly after his parents were found dead at their Brentwood home early Sunday morning. Surveillance footage obtained by authorities shows Reiner purchasing a drink at a gas station hours following the incident. The Reiners’ daughter, Romy, discovered the bodies when she went to check on her parents after a massage therapist had been sent to the residence without receiving a response.
Reiner has a documented history of drug addiction and rehab cycles, with reports indicating he has cycled in and out of treatment at least 17 times. Sources describe Reiner’s recent erratic behavior, including an altercation with comedian Bill Hader during a gathering and a heated argument with his parents at a holiday party hosted by Conan O’Brien. His attorney, Alan Jackson, stated the case involves “very very complex, serious issues” requiring careful analysis before resolution.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman has indicated Reiner faces potential life in prison or the death penalty if convicted, though no decision has been made on whether capital punishment will be sought.
