Trump Nominates Nicole Saphier as Surgeon General Amid Controversial Health Agenda

President Trump announced Thursday the nomination of Dr. Nicole B. Saphier as the next United States Surgeon General, withdrawing the earlier nomination of Dr. Casey Means. In a Truth Social post, Trump hailed Saphier as a “STAR physician” whose career has focused on guiding women through breast cancer treatment while advancing early cancer detection and prevention, and advocating for men and women across all cancer diagnoses.

Trump declared: “Dr. Nicole Saphier will do great things for our Country, and help, ‘MAKE AMERICA HEALTHY AGAIN.’” The title of Saphier’s 2020 book—Make America Healthy Again—has become the rallying slogan for Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s health agenda. Her 2021 work, Panic Attack, critiques pandemic-era shutdowns and school closures—a stance aligning with figures including Kennedy and Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, acting director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The White House spokesperson directed inquiries to the administration regarding Saphier’s nomination, following Trump’s assertion that Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana obstructed Means’ confirmation by calling him “a very disloyal person.” Trump criticized Cassidy for allegedly voting to impeach the president on what he characterized as a “total Hoax and Scam,” while praising Means as a “MAHA Warrior” committed to addressing childhood disease epidemics, rising autism rates, poor nutrition, over-medicalization, and infertility.

This marks Trump’s third surgeon general nominee in his second term. His first pick, Dr. Janette Nesheiwat—a New York family physician and former Fox News medical contributor—had her nomination withdrawn days before a Senate confirmation hearing last year. The role, historically the nation’s “doctor,” involves issuing health advisories and serving in the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps.
