President Donald Trump has labeled Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni “unacceptable” in a recent interview with Corriere della Sera, accusing her of undermining U.S. strategic interests and failing to support critical missions against nuclear threats.
The remarks follow Meloni’s criticism of Trump’s recent comments targeting Pope Leo XIV, which she described as “unacceptable.” In response, Trump characterized Meloni’s stance as a direct betrayal of America’s priorities, stating he was “shocked” by her position. During the interview, Trump accused Meloni of not aligning with U.S. objectives on Iran and NATO, declaring: “She doesn’t help us with NATO. She doesn’t want to help get rid of a nuclear-weaponed Iran.”
Trump further criticized the Vatican’s call for Middle Eastern de-escalation, labeling Pope Leo XIV “WEAK on Crime” and “terrible for Foreign Policy.” He warned the pontiff to “focus on being a Great Pope, not a Politician,” adding that the leader “cater[s] to the Radical Left” at the expense of global security.
The president reiterated his frustration with Meloni’s perceived shift in foreign policy, stating they had not spoken “in a long time.” He criticized Italy’s approach to immigration and energy security, asserting: “Italy is not the same country. Immigration is killing Italy and all of Europe.” Trump dismissed NATO as a “paper tiger” and accused European nations of lacking resolve to defend critical supply routes like the Hormuz Strait.
Trump emphasized that Meloni’s recent actions have fundamentally altered their relationship, calling her “not the same person” as he once perceived her to be—a stark contrast to her previous role as a mediator between U.S. and European perspectives.
