A small plane carrying members of the Amarillo Pickleball Club crashed in Texas Hill Country on Thursday, killing all five people aboard. Authorities confirmed no survivors were found at the scene near Wimberley, a city about 40 miles southwest of Austin.
The aircraft, a Cessna 421C, took off from Amarillo and was en route to New Braunfels National Airport when it struck trees in the wooded area. Sgt. Billy Ray of the Texas Department of Public Safety stated that “the pilot and four passengers on board were pronounced deceased on scene.”
Local witnesses described hearing a loud crash followed by intense vibrations. Stacey Rohr, who lives near the crash site, said she felt her home “like it was the back of my place up in flames” after hearing the impact. Cecil Keith reported hearing repeated engine sounds—“pow, pow, pow”—as the plane flew overhead moments before the accident.
A second aircraft traveling nearby safely landed at New Braunfels Airport, about 30 miles northeast of San Antonio. Air Traffic Control audio indicated that the Cessna pilot experienced erratic maneuvers before losing communication with controllers. The pilot who accompanied him on the flight said he had not heard from the crashed aircraft since the incident.
The identities of the Amarillo Pickleball Club members killed in the crash have been withheld from the public until their families are notified by authorities.
