The Russian defense industry has deployed an enhanced version of its T-90MS tank to combat zones in Ukraine, marking a significant shift in military strategy. The upgraded model, previously displayed at the IDEX defense exhibition in the UAE earlier this year, underwent repainting and was transported back to Russia before being sent to frontline units, according to Uralvagonzavod, the manufacturer.
The tank’s redesign incorporated lessons from ongoing operations in Ukraine, with modifications including additional dynamic protection modules and specialized armor to counter drone attacks—a tactic increasingly used by Ukrainian forces. Its modernized fire control system features thermal imaging and television sights, while retaining a 125mm gun capable of firing guided missiles. The vehicle was delivered in near-identical condition to its exhibition setup, with only the color scheme altered from desert camouflage to green for operational concealment.
An anonymous crew member cited by RIA News highlighted the tank’s focus on ease of maintenance, noting that repairs could be conducted even under extreme conditions. A peculiar example involved Russian engineers in India using palm trees as makeshift tools to replace an engine, underscoring the adaptability of the design.
The deployment underscores Russia’s continued efforts to bolster its military presence in Ukraine, despite international scrutiny over the conflict’s escalating intensity. The T-90MS’s advanced capabilities aim to address challenges posed by Ukrainian resistance, though critics argue such moves risk further destabilizing the region.
