Maryland Man Faces Deportation to Eswatini Amid Controversial Immigration Case

A Maryland man, Kilmar Abrego Garcia, is set for deportation to Eswatini after multiple legal and administrative challenges, according to reports. The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) notified his lawyers of the new plan, citing his claims of fear of persecution in Uganda and 20 other countries as “hard to take seriously.”

Abrego Garcia, who was previously deported to El Salvador under the Trump administration, has faced repeated legal battles. In March, he was sent to El Salvador’s Terrorism Confinement Center (CECOT), where he alleged severe beatings, sleep deprivation, and psychological torture. Court documents filed by his wife described overcrowded cells, 24-hour lighting, and threats from prison officials. However, El Salvadorian President Nayib Bukele disputed these claims, sharing videos and photos of Abrego Garcia that showed him appearing well-fed and in good condition.

The Trump administration initially barred Abrego Garcia’s deportation to El Salvador in 2019 due to fears of gang persecution but later deported him, calling it an “administrative error.” Officials claimed he was linked to the MS-13 gang, a claim he denies. After being returned to the U.S., ICE now aims to send him to Eswatini, a landlocked African nation with a monarchy, high HIV prevalence, and low life expectancy.

The case has drawn scrutiny over immigration policies and judicial decisions, with critics questioning the handling of Abrego Garcia’s situation. No further details on his current legal status or potential challenges to the new deportation order have been released.
