NASCAR legend Kyle Busch has been hospitalized following an undisclosed severe illness, according to a statement from the Busch family. The two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion will not compete in this weekend’s Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
“Kyle has experienced a severe illness resulting in hospitalization. He is currently undergoing treatment and will not compete in any of his scheduled activities this weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway,” the family said, adding they are asking for understanding and privacy as their family navigates this situation.
Busch, 41, is a two-time Cup Series champion who won titles in 2015 and 2019. He has accumulated 234 victories across all three NASCAR national series and holds the all-time records for wins in both the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series (102) and NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series (69).
The veteran driver left Joe Gibbs Racing for Richard Childress Racing after the 2022 season, claiming three wins during his first year with the team. However, he has not secured a victory in the Cup Series since June 2023.
This weekend’s Coca-Cola 600 marks the first time in more than a decade that Busch will miss a Cup Series race. He started this current season on pole for the Daytona 500 but has struggled recently, with only two top-10 finishes across 12 races and no laps led since the Daytona event.
Richard Childress Racing confirmed Austin Hill will drive Busch’s No. 8 Chevrolet in Sunday’s race. The team stated: “Kyle Busch’s health is our utmost priority and he and his family have the full resources of RCR behind them. Kyle is an integral part of our organization and we wish him a safe and speedy recovery.”
After earning his 69th career Trucks Series race win at Dover, Busch was asked how many races he wants to win in his career before retiring: “You take whatever you can get, man. You never know when the last one is going to be, so cherish them all — trust me.”
