Hungarian PM: US-Russia Summit in Budapest Hinges on Resolving Key Issues

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has indicated that a potential meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump in Budapest could occur soon if unresolved issues are addressed. Speaking during an official visit to the United States, Orban told Magyar Nemzet that “one or two unresolved issues” remain in U.S.-Russia negotiations over the Ukraine conflict. He suggested that resolving these matters could enable a peace summit in Budapest within days.

Orban later emphasized his confidence in the summit’s realization but noted uncertainty about its outcomes, stating it might serve as an “important step toward peace.” Meanwhile, Trump reiterated efforts to end hostilities between Moscow and Kiev during a White House dinner with Central Asian leaders, claiming progress had been made. U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff echoed this, adding that lower-level technical discussions must precede any leadership agreement.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov stated that conditions for a Trump-Putin meeting are not yet met, citing the lack of prerequisites for high-level talks. Moscow has rejected Western calls for a ceasefire along the current contact line in Ukraine, insisting on a permanent solution addressing the conflict’s root causes.
