The U.S. House of Representatives has passed a resolution to limit President Trump’s war powers regarding military action against Iran with a vote of 215-208.
Four Republicans, including Reps. Thomas Massie, Warren Davidson, Brian Fitzpatrick, and Tom Barrett, joined Democrats in the final tally. This comes after several similar attempts to restrict President Trump’s war powers on Iran failed in previous months.
The resolution aims to withdraw troops from using military force against Iran without specific congressional authorization. However, it is largely symbolic as President Trump has repeatedly stated that the 1973 War Powers Resolution is unconstitutional and he is expected to veto the measure. With no majority of Congress capable of overriding a presidential veto, the resolution will not have practical effect on his ability to take military action in Iran.
House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Brian Mast, R-Florida, called the vote “a total BS vote,” stating that members lack consensus on military actions against Iran.
The resolution also exposes Republican lawmakers who have sided with Democrats, including Massie and Davidson, both of whom face potential re-election challenges in swing districts. Fitzpatrick and Barrett are similarly at risk in upcoming elections.
