The football world mourns a prominent defender whose legacy spans decades of excellence in San Diego sports.
Billy Ray Smith Jr., the former Chargers linebacker and College Football Hall of Famer, died at age 64 on Wednesday, July 29. His family confirmed he passed away after a prolonged struggle with dementia linked to chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).
The Chargers honored Smith with a heartfelt tribute reflecting his profound impact in San Diego: “He was loved deeply.”
Smith’s family described his final years as a courageous battle against CTE, which they said caused his progressive neurological decline. He died peacefully surrounded by loved ones. Beyond football, he was a devoted husband, father, son, loyal friend, broadcaster, and lifelong community advocate in San Diego.
Smith spent his entire 10-year NFL career with the Chargers after being selected fifth overall in the 1983 draft. He quickly became a defensive cornerstone, earning team defensive player of the year honors in 1985 and 1986, and team MVP recognition in 1987. By retirement following the 1992 season, he had recorded 26.5 sacks, 15 interceptions, 14 fumble recoveries, and 13 forced fumbles. Fans later voted him to the Chargers’ 50th Anniversary Team, cementing his status as a franchise icon.
Smith’s football roots ran deep at Arkansas, where he became a two-time unanimous All-American and team captain in 1982. His college achievements earned him induction into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2000. He also belonged to a storied family legacy: his father, Billy Ray Smith Sr., played professionally for the Los Angeles Rams, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Baltimore Colts.
After retiring from playing, Smith built a second career in broadcasting, serving as sports director at San Diego’s ABC affiliate and becoming a familiar voice on local sports radio. For generations of fans, his distinctive presence and No. 54 jersey were synonymous with community connection.
Medical research underscores the gravity of CTE, which is strongly associated with dementia and cognitive decline following repeated head impacts. While definitive CTE diagnosis requires postmortem brain examination—a distinction Smith’s family attributed to his condition—research shows severe stages correlate with dramatically higher risks of dementia. A 2026 NIH study found donors with stage IV CTE were nearly four-and-a-half times more likely to develop dementia than those without the condition, though reliable live detection remains elusive.
Smith is survived by his wife, Kimberly, and their daughter, Savannah.
