Grindr, the popular LGBTQ dating and online hookup app, will host its inaugural “White House Correspondents’ Dinner Weekend Party” on April 24, ahead of the annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner on April 25.
A flyer for the event describes it as a gathering “bringing together leaders across government, media, and the LGBTQ community to toast the First Amendment.”
Grindr CEO George Arison previously emphasized that the platform is designed to be inclusive regardless of political affiliation. He noted a significant increase in usage during the 2024 Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.
President Trump has announced his attendance at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner for the first time as president, after skipping it each year throughout his first term and last year’s event. Trump stated that negative experiences with the press were the reason for his absence from previous dinners.
Joe Hack, Grindr’s head of global government affairs, described the event as “the most iconic place in the country to make connections” and highlighted the app’s focus on issues including HIV funding, privacy, and LGBTQ+ rights.
The White House Correspondents’ Association has hosted presidential dinners since 1921. Calvin Coolidge became the first president to attend in 1924. Trump is set to end his streak of skipping these events after previously citing his negative experiences with the press as the reason for his absence.
