Florida Moves to Eliminate Property Taxes for Homeowners – But With a Targeted Approach

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has officially moved to abolish property taxes on primary residences, according to a recent announcement. The legislation aims to provide homeowners with tax-free ownership of their homes while preventing out-of-state residents from exploiting the system.

During a press conference today, DeSantis stated that the policy would apply exclusively to Florida residents who meet specific criteria, ensuring that individuals seeking to avoid taxes by relocating after the law takes effect cannot benefit. “Should someone from New York be able to move the day after it passes and not pay? They should pay for a time! Why would we want to incentivize that?” DeSantis emphasized.

The measure would shield primary residences while maintaining property taxes on investment properties, second homes, and commercial real estate. DeSantis outlined plans for a special legislative session this summer, with the goal of placing the reform on the ballot by early August. The initiative requires securing 60% support in both chambers before being printed on the ballot.

This proposal positions Florida as potentially the first state to implement such a policy nationally, though DeSantis confirmed it is designed solely for Floridians and not intended for out-of-state taxpayers who might attempt to circumvent the system.
