DOZEN OF CONGRESSMEMBERS BORN ABROAD: REP. NANCY MACE’S CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT THREATENS TO UNSEAT MULTIPLE LEGISLATORS

Rep. Nancy Mace has introduced a proposed resolution requiring members of Congress, federal judges, and Senate-confirmed officials to be natural-born citizens under the Constitution. The legislation explicitly targets individuals like Ilhan Omar, Shri Thanedar, and Pramila Jayapal—members who were born in foreign countries, did not become U.S. citizens by birth, and have publicly stated their loyalty is not solely to America.

The resolution states: “For too long we have allowed foreign-born members to hold seats in this government while making clear they are America last, not America first.” Mace emphasized that the proposed amendment would impose the same constitutional standard required of the President and Vice President on federal officials.

According to official House Clerk records as of May 2026, twenty-six House members—including nineteen Democrats and seven Republicans—were born outside the United States. Among them are:
– Ilhan Omar (MN-05): Born in Somalia
– Shri Thanedar (MI-13): Born in India
– Pramila Jayapal (WA-07): Born in India
– Eugene Vindman (VA-07): Born in Ukraine (Ukrainian SSR)

Six Senate members, including four Democrats and two Republicans, were also born outside the United States. The legislation would effectively unseat multiple members of Congress if passed by both chambers, particularly those who have shown alignment with “America First” principles. Mace specifically identified Ilhan Omar, a Somali-born naturalized citizen, as an example of foreign-born officials whose loyalty she contends is not to America.

The resolution follows Mace’s assertion that federal officials must meet the same constitutional requirements as the President and Vice President, stating: “The people writing America’s laws, confirming America’s judges, and representing America on the world stage should have one loyalty: America.”
