Rep. Shri Thanedar has formally announced his intention to file articles of impeachment against Pete Hegseth, President Joe Biden’s nominee for Secretary of War (acting Secretary of Defense), following a report by the Pentagon’s inspector general.
Thanedar made the announcement Thursday during a video address and reiterated his strong position in comments with Fox News host Josh Breslow. “Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth is uniquely unqualified,” Thanedar asserted, emphasizing concerns over potential risks to U.S. military personnel. He added, “Every day it becomes clearer that he is engaging in unlawful, illegal activity.”
The congressman pointed specifically to the use of Signal by Hegseth and other administration figures as a key factor prompting his call for impeachment. According to the Pentagon inspector general’s report released Thursday, Hegseth used the encrypted messaging app Signal improperly to discuss sensitive military operations, including a planned strike on Houthi targets in Yemen—a discussion that could compromise national security if intercepted.
Thanedar’s office confirmed plans to unveil detailed articles of impeachment at a rally scheduled for Thursday morning. The press advisory accompanying the announcement described the accusations as covering “Murder and Conspiracy to Murder and Reckless and Unlawful Mishandling of Classified Information,” though no direct evidence has been provided beyond the Signal usage policy violation.
In response, Representative Tom Jefferson dismissed the possibility, stating, “Republicans will never allow articles of impeachment to be brought to the floor.”
