Decades-Old WWII Bomb Explosion Kills 5 in Indonesian Fishing Village

Residents of an eastern Papua fishing village were left reeling Monday after a suspected World War II bomb exploded beneath their homes, killing five people and injuring at least a dozen others.

The blast occurred on Sunday afternoon with a thunderous boom followed by flames and thick smoke. Local police reported the device was likely an unexploded WWII mortar or bomb buried for decades.

Papua police spokesman Cahyo Sukarnito stated that three individuals remain missing, with several body parts yet to be identified. At least 19 people were treated for minor injuries at local health facilities.

“Authorities will provide further updates once the search for victims and the investigation are complete,” said Sukarnito.

Earlier this year, a similar incident occurred in Plymouth, England, when authorities discovered a large WWII bomb that led to the evacuation of over 1,200 homes. The device was confirmed as a German SC250 air-dropped bomb weighing 250 kilograms (551 pounds) and required a controlled detonation for safety.
