A Los Altos vice mayor is under increasing pressure to resign after screenshots reveal he repeatedly posted the phrase “86 47” online—identical language at the center of a federal indictment against former FBI Director James Comey.
According to verified screenshots reviewed by Fox News Digital, Los Altos Vice Mayor Larry Lang altered his Facebook cover photo to a seashell-style depiction of “86 47” and separately commented the phrase on a California GOP Facebook post. Critics interpret the term as a threat against President Donald Trump, referencing the phrase’s restaurant slang meaning: “to get rid of something.”
California Republican Party Chair Corrin Rankin condemned Lang’s actions, stating Los Altos residents deserve leaders who unite their community rather than amplify “dangerous rhetoric.” The state party publicly demanded his resignation, emphasizing that elected officials must avoid fueling tensions instead of lowering them.
The phrase now carries significant legal weight following the Justice Department’s April 21 announcement that a federal grand jury indicted Comey on charges involving alleged threats to harm President Trump. Prosecutors tied the indictment to an Instagram image showing “86 47” dated May 15, 2025—a text they asserted would be understood as a serious expression of intent to cause bodily harm or death.
Lang’s automatic email reply indicated he was traveling until May 4, and Los Altos council members did not respond to inquiries from Fox News Digital prior to publication. His Facebook cover photo change occurred Friday, after the controversy initially drew attention from conservative accounts and the state party.
Public officials cannot safely engage with language their own side would treat as a national scandal if directed at Democrats. Lang faces urgent pressure to provide a clear explanation for his use of the phrase amid its direct connection to federal legal proceedings involving former FBI leadership.
