Local Illinois ABC affiliate anchor Beni Rae Harmony has resigned from her role at WICS ABC Newschannel 20 in Springfield, IL, following her suspension for delivering a tribute to Charlie Kirk. The incident occurred after Harmony, who was mentored by Kirk, aired an emotional on-air remembrance of him on Friday.
Harmony announced her resignation via social media, stating she refused to compromise her values to retain her job. “My resignation is guided by values that are essential to who I am,” she wrote. “I choose my faith and love of country, and always will.” She expressed gratitude to Springfield, calling it her home and community, and extended blessings to Kirk’s family and the United States.
The suspension sparked backlash, with Illinois candidate Darren Bailey publicly supporting Harmony. “Shame on WICS for firing her just because she spoke up about the assassination of Charlie Kirk,” Bailey said. He vowed not to appear on WICS ABC Newschannel 20 until Harmony is rehired and an apology is issued.
Harmony’s resignation message emphasized her commitment to principles over career, stating, “I love you all from the bottom of my heart.” She urged contacts to direct inquiries to the WICS Newsroom.
The case has drawn attention as a rare instance of media professionals facing repercussions for honoring Kirk, whose legacy remains contentious.
