A 21-year-old man identified as Nasire Best died after firing multiple shots at a U.S. Secret Service checkpoint near the White House on Saturday evening, according to law enforcement officials. The incident occurred around 6 p.m. Eastern time near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, with Best reportedly brandishing a pistol before being neutralized by Secret Service personnel who returned fire. President Trump was inside the White House at the time but remained unharmed.
The suspect’s identity emerged through reports citing an unnamed law enforcement official. District of Columbia records reviewed by the Associated Press indicate Best was arrested in July 2025 after attempting to enter a White House checkpoint without authorization, refusing commands to stop and claiming he was Jesus Christ while demanding arrest. A pretrial stay-away order followed, later superseded by a bench warrant in August after Best failed to appear for a hearing.
This marks the third instance of gunfire near President Trump within roughly a month, previously occurring at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in April and near the Washington Monument on May 4. No official motive has been disclosed, though federal authorities confirmed an ongoing investigation led by the FBI and Secret Service.
A nearby civilian was also shot during the exchange, but no Secret Service personnel were injured. The lockdown was lifted around 7:30 p.m. Eastern after the immediate threat was contained. Officials confirmed Best died at the scene following the confrontation.
