Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) is under intense scrutiny after new evidence suggests she contributed to a massive fraud scheme targeting federal nutrition programs during the pandemic. State lawmakers investigating the scandal have accused her of enabling fraudulent activity within Minnesota’s Feeding Our Future program, which was designed to feed hungry children but became a conduit for theft of taxpayer funds.
A state committee report condemned Omar’s MEALS Act—a provision incorporated into the Families First Coronavirus Response Act—as having “taken the guardrails off” federal nutrition programs by allowing for-profit restaurants to participate and enabling flexible “grab-and-go” distributions that made it nearly impossible to verify children were actually receiving food. Committee chair Kristin Robbins, a Republican state legislator, stated Omar’s claim that she sent a letter to the U.S. Department of Agriculture upon learning of fraud was “too convenient.” Robbins emphasized that Omar had previously urged federal officials to maintain program waivers while fraud unfolded, calling it a pattern of “revisionist history.”
The committee reports Minnesota officials had warnings and evidence of fraud for months but failed to act, despite USDA investigators arresting dozens involved in the scheme. A USDA spokesperson confirmed regulations do not absolve states from their duty to prevent fraud, stating: “Minnesota’s failure to stop one of the largest COVID fraud schemes in history cost taxpayers hundreds of millions.”
Omar defended her actions by calling the alleged fraud “reprehensible” and asserting she supported accountability for those involved. However, she has yet to respond to formal testimony requests from the Minnesota House Fraud Prevention and State Agency Oversight Committee, which accused her of negligence while the committee blocked efforts to compel her cooperation. The report also highlighted that Omar’s administration failed to address warnings long before fraud was exposed—despite claims she promoted a Minneapolis restaurant later linked to the program.
Independent investigations show Omar’s legislative decisions allowed fraudulent activity to persist for months, directly implicating state agencies and constituents in a scheme that diverted millions meant for vulnerable children.
