House Republicans Block Censure of Controversial Democrat Over ICE Incident

The House of Representatives recently voted on a motion to censure Democratic Rep. LaMonica McIver, who was recorded assaulting ICE agents at a New Jersey detention facility in May. The vote ended in a 215-207 defeat for the censure effort, with several Republicans joining Democrats in opposing the measure.

McIver faces federal charges of interfering with law enforcement after the incident, which could result in up to 17 years in prison if convicted. Despite her pending trial, the censure vote failed, drawing criticism from opponents who argued it was a necessary step to address her conduct.

Five Republicans—Reps. Don Bacon and Mike Flood of Nebraska, Dave Joyce and Mike Turner of Ohio, and David Valadao of California—voted against the censure, alongside all Democratic lawmakers. Two others, Reps. Andrew Garbarino of New York and Nathaniel Moran of Texas, cast abstentions.

Bacon stated that the Ethics Committee should handle the matter, while a spokesperson for Turner noted an accidental vote that did not alter the outcome. McIver has denied wrongdoing, claiming the charges and censure effort are politically motivated.

The incident occurred during an oversight visit to a Newark immigration facility, where federal agents arrested the city’s mayor. McIver later dismissed Republican criticism, asserting they could not “make her run scared.”
